Symptoms:
- How do I activate my SpeedTree license?
- How do I activate my SpeedTree Learning Edition license?
- How do I activate my SpeedTree Indie license?
- How do I activate my SpeedTree Pro/Enterprise license?
Resolution:
There are three license types for SpeedTree. Click the license you want to activate to go to the relevant section:
SpeedTree Learning Edition
SpeedTree Learning Edition allows eligible users to learn how to use SpeedTree for free. A SpeedTree account is required, but no purchase is necessary.
SpeedTree Learning Edition does not allow mesh exports, and the tree save file formats are .SPL instead of .SPM. SpeedTree Learning Edition can open both .SPL and .SPM, but the other license types will not open .SPL files.
There are no other restrictions in functionality, so you can use all the features of SpeedTree.
To activate the SpeedTree Learning Edition license, follow the steps below:
- Click Help on the top navigation bar and choose Licensing info... in the dropdown menu.
- In the pop-up window, click Learning Edition.
- Enter your Username/Email and Password for your SpeedTree Store account and click Log In.
SpeedTree Indie
SpeedTree Indie licenses are monthly subscriptions purchased from the SpeedTree Store. The indie license is tied to one specific user and is activated using a login, rather than a license key.
To activate the SpeedTree Indie license, follow the steps below:
- Click Help on the top navigation bar and choose Licensing info... in the dropdown menu.
- In the pop-up window, click Indie.
- Enter your Username/Email and Password for your SpeedTree Store account and click Log In.
Please note: You can log into your account on any machine with SpeedTree, but only one machine at a time. There are no restrictions in functionality for Indie licenses. |
SpeedTree Pro/Enterprise
SpeedTree Pro/Enterprise licenses are purchased for specific terms from the SpeedTree Store. The license is either tied to a single machine (node-locked) or receives licenses from a license server (floating license).
Trial license
When you first run the SpeedTree Modeler (Games/ Cinema), you are in trial mode. This mode lets you use SpeedTree, but it will only last a few days.
Exporting meshes is limited by having random polygons removed. Exported animations are also limited to 100 frames.
If you have not had adequate time to evaluate SpeedTree during the free trial period, it is possible to request an extension. Please contact licensing@speedtree.com for a trial extension.
Node-locked license
A node-locked license only works on a single machine.
After purchasing a license on the SpeedTree Store, you need to request a license key to use on your machine.
To activate a node-locked SpeedTree Pro/Enterprise license, follow the steps below:
- Click Help on the top navigation bar and click Licensing info... in the dropdown menu.
- In the pop-up window, click Pro/Enterprise.
- Click the Request license... button to submit a license request to Interactive Data Visualization (IDV). IDV is the developer of SpeedTree. An automated email containing 'Name', 'Email', 'Company', 'Phone', 'Order#', and Host ID is sent.
- In the License Request pop-up window, fill in all the information and click OK.
- After completing your license request, you receive an email containing a license string. Copy & paste the string into the License box and click Apply.
Your Node-Locked SpeedTree license is activated.
Floating license
Floating licenses work by running a license server on a machine designated to be the host and then having each installation of the SpeedTree Modeler look to that host to receive a license.
If you want to set up a license server, please ask your IT department to contact licensing@speedtree.com and we will walk you through the process, which involves the below steps:
-
Select a machine to be the license server for your company. Your machine should conform to the following requirements
- A stable machine that doesn't require frequent rebooting. The device can be either a server or a workstation.
- Low network traffic.
-
Download the End User Bundle that matches the platform of your license server from Reprise Software.
-
Run the command
rlmutil rlmhostid
. Email the hostid(s) along with the name of the license server to licensing@speedtree.com. You receive two files from IDV:idvinc.set
andcustomer.lic
.customer.lic
is your company's unique license file. -
Place the two files in the End User Bundle folder and run the rlm binary. The license server is now running.
-
Once the license server is running, all that remains is to make each installation of the SpeedTree Modeler know where to get its license.
- The easiest way to do that is to copy thecustomer.lic
file into the folder where the Modeler executable resides.
- Alternatively, you can copy the contents of thecustomer.lic
file into the Enter license code from IDV here: box in the Modeler. The Modeler uses the first line of the file to find the license server and check out a license. -
To administer the license server, open a browser and enter <hostmachinename>:5054 in the address bar. This opens the license server's embedded web interface. The license server interface is used for checking license usage, license server status, and all other administration utilities. A detailed description of license server management can be found in RLM's end-user manual.
