Can I make a commercial game with Unity Free/Personal Edition?

    Great question. Let me explain. 

    Unity Student plan is covered by Unity Terms of Service. Students are free to use the Student plan for commercial purposes (upload games/apps to the iOS and Android Store) as long as the revenue does not exceed $100K.

    I can confirm that you are free to make and develop games in Unity without the need for a website or domain. However, having a good social media and internet presence during development and after its release, would certainly help to market your game and spread the word.

    You are absolutely right, if your game earns you revenue over $100,000 USD, then you would be required to upgrade and purchase a Unity Plus license to continue using the software.

    Firstly, thank you for the answers already posted in this thread, they've certainly helped to clarify some issues. I am still unsure about a couple of things though.

    We have some PhD students at our institution who would like to use Unity to develop applications. They would then like to share the finished projects with researchers at other institutions via GitHub, or via open science repositories such as OSF (i.e. not via any commercial platforms). The applications would be made available for free.

    The replies to Dexter Prior and Ardash suggest that our students could do this under the terms of a student license. On the other hand, the reply to Graham Richardson suggests that a pro license is necessary if an application is released on behalf of an academic institution. Can I check what the difference is between an application released on behalf of an academic institution, and an application released by a student at that institution? When would an application be considered to have been released by an institution, and when by an individual student at that institution? What would our students need to do to make sure they remained within the terms of the student license?

    In the situation described above, could our students also distribute their projects using a personal license to avoid having the watermark?

    If our students distributed their projects using a student license, would it be possible to continue sharing the finished projects once they had stopped being students (assuming the projects were not being actively developed)?

    If our students initially distributed their projects using a student or personal license, and we later wanted to modify the projects, could we import the projects if we bought a pro license for our institution?

    hello, i'm sorry if you have already answered this question, i'm learning now about unity and pixel art to publish my own game, when i finish it and sell it on steam and started making money then if i made more than 100K$ then i should purchase the pro version, right? and let's say i wanna release it for smartphones not pc, should i use unity ads for it if i'm gonna make it free to download? and if i did use unity ads, will it notify me if i surpassed a 100K$ revenue, to buy the pro version?

    I can confirm that as soon as your revenue exceeds $100k USD, you would need to upgrade to Unity Plus/Pro, to ensure you are following our terms of service.

    In regards to using Unity Ads for your game or app, this is completely your choice to make, depending on exactly what you are looking to do. Many mobile app developers make use of Unity Ads, while others do not.

    However, using Unity Ads will not notify you of your subscription tier. This is something that you will need to be aware of and mindful of when using Unity.
