To access the Xbox forums on Unity Discussions, you must be an Xbox developer approved by Microsoft (through ID@Xbox or a registered publisher, both of which involve an NDA with Microsoft), have an eligible Unity license on your Unity ID (Unity Pro or Enterprise with a seat assigned, a Unity Pro trial, or an active Student or Educator plan), and have a free Unity Discussions account. You then submit a request through the Secure GDK Middleware Request page, selecting Unity as your middleware provider; you do not need to contact your Microsoft representative. Once Microsoft processes the request, you receive a welcome email with a verification link, and forum access is granted as soon as your Unity license is verified.
What do I need before I start?
- An Xbox developer registration with Microsoft, which includes signing an NDA (see step 1 below for the available paths).
- An eligible Unity license on the Unity ID you plan to use: a Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise subscription with a valid seat assigned to that Unity ID, a Unity Pro trial, or an active Unity Student or Unity Educator plan on that Unity ID. Access with a Unity Pro trial is temporary: license status is checked periodically, so to keep access after the trial ends, upgrade to a paid Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise subscription. The Unity Education Grant License does not qualify for Xbox forum access.
- A free Unity Discussions account, created at discussions.unity.com. You need this before Xbox forum access can be set up for you.
How do I get access?
-
Register as an Xbox developer with Microsoft. The most common ways to be onboarded are:
- ID@Xbox program: Microsoft's program for developers of all sizes, from indies to established studios. Go to the Xbox Developer site and select Join ID@Xbox. Microsoft requires that you are at least 18 years old, sign an NDA, and are in a country where Microsoft can do business.
- Through an existing publisher: an already-registered publisher handles the NDA and title registration, then authorizes your team.
Once onboarded, your organization has a Microsoft Partner Center account provisioned as an Xbox development partner. Permissions to secure Xbox resources are managed by your organization's Partner Center account owner through a Microsoft Entra ID tenant associated with that account. In step 3 you sign in with the account associated with your organization's Partner Center account. See Access GDK development resources on Microsoft Learn.
- Make sure your Unity ID has an eligible license. A Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise subscription with a valid seat assigned to your Unity ID, a Unity Pro trial (temporary access), or an active Unity Student or Unity Educator plan on that Unity ID.
-
Submit the Secure GDK Middleware Request. Sign in to the Xbox Developer site with the account associated with your organization's Partner Center account, open the Secure GDK Middleware Request page, submit the request, and select Unity as your middleware provider. The request page is only available to signed-in Xbox development partners; personal Microsoft accounts are not supported.
You do not need to ask your Microsoft representative or Unity to add you: since January 2026, Xbox forum access is granted automatically through this request. Once Microsoft processes it, Unity sends you the welcome email described below.
What happens next?
Once Microsoft processes your request, you receive a welcome email from Unity with a secure verification link. Click the link and sign in with the Unity ID that holds your eligible license — it is fine if this email address is different from the one on your Microsoft account. As soon as your license is verified, you are granted access to the private Xbox forum on Unity Discussions, where you can download the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One Add-ons for Unity Editor and the console-only packages for your version of Unity, and receive technical assistance. You do not need to reply to the email.
- If you have submitted your request but have not received the welcome email, or your link no longer works, return to the Secure GDK Middleware Request page and submit the request again to receive a new email with an updated link.
- If you submit more than one request, only the link in the most recent email works.
- If you see a "license not detected" error right after purchasing or being assigned a seat, license data can take several hours to sync. Wait at least 24 hours, then try the verification link again.
- If you see a "critical error occurred" message when linking accounts, your Microsoft account is already linked to a different Unity ID. Contact Unity Support to have the existing link cleared.
- If additional teammates need access to the Xbox forums, each person submits their own request through the Secure GDK Middleware Request page. Each verification link can be used only once and links to a single Unity ID, so a link can't be shared between teammates.
Why is access restricted?
Forums are useful tools for interacting with other developers, solving common problems, and networking. The Xbox forums are a dedicated area of Unity Discussions, but because Xbox is a closed platform under NDA, only developers approved by Microsoft can participate.
