This article guides certified PlayStation® developers on how to build and deploy Unity projects to PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®5. It outlines steps to register as a PlayStation® Partner, verify Unity license eligibility (Pro, Enterprise, or Student/Educator), confirm developer status on DevNet, verify the Unity account, and download PlayStation® build support modules. Is this article for you?
This article can help if:
- You want to build and deploy a Unity project to PlayStation®5 or PlayStation®4.
- You can’t find or download PlayStation® build support in Unity Hub.
- You’re getting started with PlayStation® development and aren’t sure where to begin.
Why you might not have PlayStation® build access
Before you begin
Make sure you have the following in place:
- An active, seat-based Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise license (a Student or Educator plan seat also works). Free Educational Grant licenses don’t qualify. Sony no longer issues Unity license keys, so you’ll need your own valid Unity subscription.
- A registered PlayStation® Partners account with DevNet access (see Step 1).
- A free Unity Discussions account, created at discussions.unity.com. You’ll need this before your PlayStation® forum access can be set up.
Step 1: Register as a PlayStation® Partner
- Apply and register as an official partner on the PlayStation® Partners website.
- Once approved, contact your assigned Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) representative to request access to DevNet, Sony’s developer network.
Step 2: Confirm your Unity license is eligible
Sony doesn’t provide Unity development tools or license keys for PlayStation®, so you’ll need one of the following Unity licenses, with a seat assigned to the Unity ID you plan to use:
- Unity Pro
- Unity Enterprise
- A Student or Educator plan, with a seat assigned to your account
Note: Educational Grant licenses aren’t seat-based and won’t qualify for PlayStation® forum or build access. If you don’t yet have an eligible license, reach out to your Unity representative or visit the online store to purchase Unity Pro.
Step 3: Confirm your developer status with Unity on DevNet
- Log in to DevNet.
- Go to the Tools & Middleware directory and find Unity.
- Click to confirm your developer status with Unity. Do this separately for each platform you want to target – PlayStation®4 and/or PlayStation®5.
For detailed steps, see the article, 'How can I access the PlayStation® forums?'
Step 4: Verify your Unity account
- After confirming your status on DevNet, you’ll receive a “Unity for PlayStation® Developer Confirmation” email with a unique activation link.
- Before clicking the link, make sure you’re signed into the exact Unity ID that holds your eligible Pro or Enterprise seat; ideally, in an incognito or private browsing window. Clicking the link while signed into a different Unity account (like a personal one) can lock your DevNet profile to the wrong account.
- Once verified, your Unity account is added to the private PlayStation®4 and/or PlayStation®5 groups on Unity Discussions.
Tip: Each teammate who needs forum access must have their own unique DevNet profile linked to their own licensed Unity ID. Sharing one DevNet profile across multiple Unity accounts isn’t supported and will lock the association.
Step 5: Download your PlayStation® build support modules
- Sign in to your Unity Discussions account.
- Open the private PlayStation®4 or PlayStation®5 forum section you were added to.
- Download the build support installer or add-on that matches your installed Unity Editor version.
Troubleshooting common issues
If something isn’t working as expected, check here first:
| If you see this | Try this |
| “The Unity email associated with this account has already been used” | You (or a teammate) likely clicked the DevNet activation link while signed into the wrong Unity account. Use an incognito window and sign in with the exact Unity ID that holds your Pro or Enterprise seat before clicking the link. If you’re already locked out, contact Unity Support to clear the association. |
| A “license not detected” or “license has not been detected” error | License and seat data can take up to 24 hours to sync across Unity’s systems. Wait a day, then try again. |
| Verification keeps failing | Make sure the email address on your Sony DevNet account matches the Unity ID with your assigned Pro or Enterprise license. |
| You need to add a teammate to the PlayStation forums | They’ll need their own DevNet profile linked to their own licensed Unity ID – one DevNet profile can’t be shared across multiple Unity accounts. |
