This article explains why the “Open in Unity” button may not launch Unity Hub/Editor or show assets in Package Manager. It clarifies that the button hands the asset to Hub/Editor: launch Hub if no project is open; open Package Manager if a project is active. Common fixes include enabling browser pop-ups/external app launches and ensuring the Editor is installed via Unity Hub. Sign in with the purchasing Unity ID, use a compatible version, and check network settings.
The Open in Unity button's purpose is to hand off the asset page to Unity Hub/Editor. If no project is open, Unity Hub launches; if a project is already open, it brings the asset into the Package Manager, where you can then download and import it.
- The two most common causes are:
- The browser is blocking the action (pop-up or application launch blocked).
- The Unity Editor was installed independently (outside of Unity Hub). The Open in Unity asset store button is not supported with Editor installations that are not managed by Unity Hub.
Understand how Open in Unity works
- If no project is open, clicking "Open in Unity" will launch Unity Hub, allowing you to select or create a project. It will not download the asset at this step.
- If a project is open, clicking Open in Unity will open the Package Manager inside the Editor, where you can download and import the asset.
If Open in Unity does not launch the Hub or Editor
- First, manually open a project in Unity via Unity Hub.
- Return to the asset’s store page and click Open in Unity again. The asset should now appear in the Package Manager for download/import.
Check for common blockers
- Browser/application launch blocked:
- Enable pop-ups and allow the browser to open external applications.
- If prompted, choose to open links with Unity Hub/Unity Editor and remember the choice.
- Editor not installed via Hub:
- Ensure your Unity Editor is installed and managed through Unity Hub. The Open in Unity button is not supported with standalone Editor installs.
- If needed, reinstall or add the Editor version through Unity Hub and open your project from the Hub.
- Account and version checks
- Sign in to the purchasing Unity ID in Unity Hub.
- Verify the asset’s supported Unity versions and open a compatible Editor version (installed via Hub).
- Network troubleshooting (rarely needed)
- Connectivity issues are uncommon for this workflow, but if you suspect one:
- If a proxy is in use, allow ports 80 and 443.
- Temporarily deactivate antivirus/firewall to test, or add exceptions for Unity Hub and Unity Editor.
- If Wi‑Fi is unstable, try a wired connection.
If, after these steps, Open in Unity still does not launch the Hub or show the asset in Package Manager, submit a support request to Unity Customer Experience. Include the asset name and a screen recording of the steps you’ve taken.
