Why is an internet connection required for Unity Personal?
Requiring an internet connection aligns the Unity Personal user experience with other contemporary software. Personal Edition Unity access is now linked directly to your login details, so your entitlements follow you wherever you go. You'll need to connect to the internet once every 30 days.
Named User licensing (NUL) applies to Unity versions 2019 LTS, 2020 LTS, and every more recent version (all 2021, 2022, and any future versions).
Am I required to be signed in to my account to use Unity?
You must be signed into your account only to use the Unity Hub. You can still access your projects outside the Hub, even if you are not signed in. If you are on Unity Personal Edition, you must be online at least once every 30 days. If you remain offline for over 30 days, you must connect to the internet to be unblocked.
Will I be blocked if I don't use Unity for over 30 days?
If you're a Personal Edition user and open Unity after a 30+ day absence and you:
- Have internet access: You will not experience any block or error message about being offline and can access Unity.
- Do not have internet access: You will be asked to go online. Once online, Unity will immediately re-authenticate, and you will have full access.
As a Personal Edition user, will I lose my project data if I use Unity offline for over 30 days?
If you have not been online for more than 30 days, you only need to connect to the internet to remove any blockers from accessing the Editor. Your locally saved project data is not touched.
I am a Personal Edition User. Will I be prompted to sign into my account every 30 days?
No, you will only need to be connected to the internet.
If I am a Unity Personal Edition user, how long does it take for my account to be locked when I'm working offline?
Personal Edition users have a 30-day offline grace period. If you are still not connected to the internet after 30 days, you will be asked to connect online, and your access will be restored.
What notifications would I see if I'm going to be locked out for being offline?
You will be notified in the Hub and Editor with a modal popup that tells you how many days you have remaining in your grace period. This error warns you to save your work and go online.
I am required to access Unity offline by my employer or institution. How can I get around this offline grace period?
The offline grace period only applies to Unity Personal Edition, not Student, Education, Pro, Enterprise, or Industry. However, you need internet access to sign in to the Hub.
If you belong to an organization that uses Unity Pro, Unity Enterprise, or Unity Industry, additional licenses can be purchased online via the webstore or your existing client partner. If you belong to an educational institution, for example, a college or high school, you can apply for one of our Educational licenses. To learn more and apply online, see our Unity Learn page.
