Symptoms:

- Can I use Unity Personal to create my game?
- I want to purchase a Unity subscription. Which license tier best fits my needs?
- I currently have a Unity subscription, but I want to know if I'm using the right one.
- I'm a student/educator and would like to know if special subscriptions are available.
- I am an independent contractor and have questions about licensing terms for my customer.
Cause:
Unity offers different subscription plans. Choosing the correct Unity license depends on several factors including your total financials over the past 12 months, your role (individual, team, industry professional, student, educator), and specific needs (e.g., floating licenses, industry-specific licensing, or education plans).
Resolution:
To use Unity Software, you must comply with the Tier Eligibility Requirements outlined in our Editor Terms of Service. These requirements are based on Financial Thresholds, which are evaluated based on your Total Finances for the trailing 12 months as of each date you use the software.
Below are the Unity subscription plans currently available and their corresponding Financial Thresholds and eligibility criteria:
Common important queries about licenses:
Note: Unity Plus is no longer available to purchase. |
Unity Personal:
- Eligibility: To use Unity Personal, your Total Finances must not exceed $200,000 USD over the most recent 12-month period. If your Total Finances exceed this threshold, you may not use Unity Personal under any circumstances, including for internal projects, educational purposes, or prototyping work.
Unity Pro:
- Eligibility: It is mandatory if your Total Finances exceed $200,000 USD but remain below $25,000,000 USD in the most recent 12-month period. For Industry Customers (such as those in manufacturing, architecture, automotive, or film), Unity Pro may only be used if your Total Finances are less than $1,000,000 USD.
Unity Industry:
- Eligibility: Required for Industry Customers whose Total Finances exceed $1,000,000 USD over the most recent 12 months.
Unity Enterprise:
- Eligibility: This plan is mandatory for organizations or projects whose Total Finances equal or exceed $25,000,000 USD in the most recent 12-month period. It is tailored for large-scale operations and offers enterprise-grade features, advanced deployment tools, and dedicated support. It is purchased through a Unity Client Partner.
Licenses for Education:
- Eligible students can use the free Unity Student Plan as long as their Total Finances remain under $1,000,000 USD in the past 12 months. Similarly, educators and academic institutions can access Unity Educator Plan or Unity Grant Licenses to teach enrolled students and develop curriculum using Unity's tools, subject to qualification criteria.
Licensing for Contractors:
If you are an independent contractor (legal entities or individuals) building a game or application for a third party, you must consider the customer's revenue when determining the appropriate Unity license tier. Total Finances include your customers' or clients' gross revenues and/or funding.
Therefore, if your customer's gross revenues and funding exceed a particular tier's financial threshold, you must upgrade to the appropriate Unity license tier.
Please note: The decision of whether the contractor or the contracting company should purchase the Unity license is a mutual agreement between the parties involved. Unity does not dictate which party should be responsible for purchasing the necessary license. |
Important Compliance Notes:
- You must upgrade your Unity Plan immediately upon your Total Finances exceeding the threshold of your current tier.
- Only one Unity Software tier can be used at a time across your organization.
- Projects developed with different tiers may not be combined or integrated.
