The error "Couldn’t download template: certificate has expired" in Unity Hub 3.20.x occurs due to incorrect certificate validation. To fix it, update Unity Hub to the Beta channel or download the template via the Unity Asset Store. If issues persist, contact Unity Support with your Hub version and error details.
When trying to download a learning template in Unity Hub, you may see the following error:
Couldn’t download template: certificate has expired.
This is a known issue with Unity Hub 3.20.x and is not related to your Unity account or Personal license.
Why does this happen?
Unity Hub 3.20.x may incorrectly validate the certificate when connecting to Unity’s servers. As a result, Hub may report that the certificate has expired and prevent the learning template from downloading.
You don't need to change your Unity account or license to resolve this issue.
How to fix it
Option 1: Update Unity Hub to the Beta channel
The latest Beta version includes a fix for this issue.
- Open Unity Hub.
- Click the gear icon(⚙️) to open Preferences.
- Select Advanced.
- Change Channel from Production to Beta.
- Save your changes and restart Unity Hub.
- Install the available Beta update (for example, 3.21.1-beta.1).
- Try downloading the learning template again.
Option 2: Download the template through the Unity Asset Store
If you prefer to stay on the Production version of Unity Hub, you can download the template through the Asset Store instead.
- Open the [Unity Asset Store] and search for the learning template you want to use, such as Essentials Pathway.
- Sign in to your Unity account and select Add to My Assets.
- Open Unity Hub and create a new blank 2D or 3D project.
- Once the Unity Editor opens, go to Window > Package Manager.
- Change the package source to My Assets.
- Find the template you added, then select Download and Import.
