How do I set up two-factor authentication (TFA) on my account?

In April 2026, we introduced an account security update that enforces two-factor authentication (2FA) for users who have enabled it.

With this update:

• 2FA is now required at every login
• Security checks are stronger for new devices and networks
• A “Remember this device for 30 days” option is available to reduce repeated prompts on trusted devices

Cause:

Unity has taken steps to improve the security of our users' accounts by implementing two-factor authentication, also referred to as multi-factor authentication (MFA), TFA, and 2FA. 

Two-factor authentication offers an additional layer of security against unauthorized account access. It does this by using your preferred authenticator app to log into your account.

Resolution:

Please note that, starting September 1, 2026, 2FA can only be set up using an authenticator app.

To turn on Unity's 2FA with an authenticator app, follow these steps:

1. In the Unity Dashboard, select your profile, and then select Account.
2. Go to Security.
3. On the Account security tab, in the Two-factor authentication section, select Set up next to Authenticator app.
4. If prompted, enter your password, and then select Continue.
5. Open your authenticator app, add an account, and scan the barcode.
   If you can't scan the barcode, select Can’t scan the barcode? and follow the instructions to enter the setup key manually.
6. In Enter the code from your app, enter the code that your authenticator app displays, and then select Verify.
7. Download or copy your recovery codes, and store them in a safe place.
   Use these codes to access your account if you lose access to your authenticator app.
8. Select I’ve saved my recovery codes somewhere safe, and then select Done.

To generate new recovery codes, follow these steps:

1. In the Unity Dashboard, select your profile, and then select Account.
2. Go to Security.
3. On the Account security tab, select the generate button (circular arrows) next to Authenticator app.
4. Select Generate new codes.
5. If prompted, sign in again and enter a code from your 2FA method.
6. Download or copy your new recovery codes, and store them in a safe place.

How to Launch an Authenticator App

1. Launch your chosen authenticator app and scan the QR code on the screen.

   • Authenticator apps generate random codes that you can use to sign in. They do not have access to your Unity password or account information.
   • To download:
     1. Go to your phone's App store.
     2. Search for "Authenticator App".
     3. Download an app.(E.g. AWS Virtual MFA, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)

2. Enter the code generated on your device into the text field.

3. Click Verify.

4. Download your recovery codes and click Done to complete the process.

What happens if you are unable to scan the QR code?

In any case where you are unable to scan the QR code on your Authenticator app, please follow the steps below:

1. Click on 'Can't scan the barcode?' link located right below the QR code.
2. Follow the instructions to set up the authenticator manually.

3. Once done, enter the code that is showing on your authenticator app and click 'Verify'.
