How do I enable Two-Factor Authentication (TFA) on my account?

Symptoms:

  • I want to add two-factor authentication to my Unity ID.

Cause:

Unity has taken steps to improve the security of our users' accounts by implementing two-factor authentication, also referred to as multi-factor authentication (MFA), TFA, and 2FA. 

Two-factor authentication offers an additional layer of security against unauthorized account access. It does this by using your mobile phone or your preferred authenticator app to log into your account.

Resolution:

Tip: We recommend enabling TFA using an Authenticator app, which has a distinct advantage in terms of security and availability since authenticator apps generate local codes.

Opting for an authenticator app that backs up account information is also a good idea if you lose your phone or it's stolen or broken.
  1. Sign in to your Unity ID.
  2. Select security from the left of the screen.
  3. Select Activate (+) to the right of Two Factor Authentication in the Account Security window.

  4. Click the green Start setup button.

  5. Enter your Unity ID password again (if prompted).
  6. Select which method of two-factor authentication you want to activate. You can select either Phone number or Authenticator App.
  7. Click Next.

Continue below if you've selected to receive your TFA codes via SMS using a phone number. If you've opted to receive your TFA codes using an authenticator app, click here to jump to your resolution.

To receive your TFA codes using a phone number:

  1. Select the country code for your phone number using the drop-down menu.
  2. Enter your phone number into the field without any spaces.
  3. Click Next to proceed.

  4. A code is sent to your phone number selected via SMS. Note: If you do not receive an SMS code, or your country is not listed, enable TFA using an authenticator app instead.
  5. Enter the code sent to you via SMS and click Verify.

    Note: Each code generated is valid for five minutes before expiring. If you miss this five-minute deadline, the code expires, and you must start the process again.
  6.  Download your recovery codes and click Done to complete the process.

If you've chosen to enable TFA using an authenticator app:

  1. Launch your chosen authenticator app and scan the QR code on the screen.
  2. Enter the code generated on your device into the text field.
  3. Click Verify.

  4. Download your recovery codes and click Done to complete the process.

To generate your recovery codes:

  1. Select Recovery Codes (eye icon) to the right of your preferred authentication method on the Your Two Factor Authentication page.

  2. This screen displays a series of pre-generated codes. From here, you can either Download these codes into a text file or Copy the codes to your device's clipboard, to be pasted and saved in another location on your machine.

There is also an option to Generate new codes, if you have used all of your recovery codes, or are worried that your codes have been compromised. Generating new codes expire the previously generated ones.
